Riesling - Terroir and Aromas

Muschelkalk and Mango

Muschelkalk and Mango

Riesling does not only grow in stony, sparse soils, but can develop its grandeur in heavy, limey soils, such as in the Homburger Kallmuth and Würzburger Stein vineyards (Franken), Flonheimer Feuerberg (Rheinhessen), Kallstadter Saumagen and Königsbacher Idig (Pfalz), Steinklotz, Osterberg and Bruderthal (Alsace).

The fertile, nutrient-rich soils with a well-balanced water supply produce Rieslings of a vigorous and opulent style whose acidity, as a rule, does not fully come to the fore and interacts an the whole somewhat more mildly.

The exotic, fruity notes, which mav be characterized as mango aromas, intensify in the wine with an increase of chalk in the soil. Rieslings from muschelkalk soils nevertheless alwavs require a link more time and a little more ripeness in order to develop to their full grandeur.
