Riesling - Terroir and Aromas
Variegated Sandstone and Apricot
Alongside slate, variegated sandstone forms the second classic soil type, appearing for example in the southern Pfalz site of Siebeldinger im Sonnenschein, in the entire Mittelhaardt as well as in the vinevards of Forster Kirchenstück (Pfalz), Centgrafenberg (Franken), Durbacher Plauelrain (Baden), Spiegel, Kessler and Kitterle (Alsace).
A weathered soil of variously colored, mostly red, variegated sandstone allows rapid warming and is able to store water only moderately, as a result of its sande structure.
The vines therefore tend to exhibit moderate growth and tolerate a long vegetation period which permits a more intensive formation of aromas.
Rieslings from variegated sandstone usually have a fruity, very aromatic character, clearly reminiscent of apricot, and they possess a vigorous Body and somewhat milder acidity.
