Riesling - Terroir and Aromas

Porphyry and minerality

Porphyry and minerality

This rock is of volcanic origin and forms the substrate for a soil which is as a rule sparse, with little humus overlay and fine earth, such as is found in the Traiser Bastei and in the Norheimer Kafels (Nahe), in Siefersheimer Heerkretz (Rheinhessen), but also in the Wachau and Kamptal regions.

The aerated, water-permeable and easily-warmed soil can produce Rieslings - rather like those from blue-slate soils - with mineral, almost dusty notes, as if it had just rained on a road surface.

The combination of a long ripening period, characteristic mineral and fruity aromas, fine acidity and elegant fruit creates a many-facetted Riesling. Porphyry soils, together with slate soils, are perfectly suited to produce splendid, gleaming, fruity-sweet Rieslings of almost unlimited storage potential.
