Riesling - Terroir and Aromas
Keuper and Honeydew Melon
Although they are not considered as classic Riesling soils, the heavy, water-retentive, clayey marl soils are nevertheless suitable for Riesling cultivation.
The fertile but predominantly difficult-to-warm soils bring forth Rieslings which in their structure tend toward an aroma of ripe honeydew melon and other exotic notes, and present themselves as being rather less spick; vigorous and opulent.
Heavy keuper soils are found in Untertürkheim and Fellbach (Württemberg), in Iphofen (Franken) as well as in Altenberg de Bergbieten (Alsace).
What the soil lacks in heat-storage potential must be compensated for by a particularly well exposed site and accordingly high levels of sunshine.
